When a friend was shopping for a new can opener, I thought about the one I use . . . . I bought it in an old-fashioned hardware store. This store has been in business since 1870 and has the old wooden floors and the walls are lined with mysterious drawers filled with bolts, washers, and parts I couldn’t even identify. It’s a step back in time and I love it! Whoops, I digress. What I like:
1. It’s right on the edge of the cabinet so it never gets lost
2. It works well on all kinds of cans
3. It has a magnetic arm that “catches” the lid
4. It is easier to work because I don’t have to use my fingers to twist the handle. . . arm motion! Works the bicep . . not much, but it sounds good!
5. Mine end up lasting about 12-15 years each.
6. It works on tall cans, short cans, chubby and thin cans…yes, I know it was Dr. Seuss’s birthday last month.
7. NO electricity involved!
8. If you want to try mine out, drop by my house and we’ll open a can of green beans or something.
9. I just love going into Isham’s Hardware to buy something . . It just feels timeless.
10. Did I mention, no electricity? (I know I did, but it just seems to give some sense of completeness and closure if I have 10 reasons
)
Martha came to visit me when my friend Becca was at my house. She is a social animal (Martha, I mean…. Becca is NOT an animal . . .in fact Becca is so private she would probably blush to know her first name was mentioned here).
Even though Martha sometimes gets worked up about happenings in her goose world at odd hours, I love her. I don’t know why. I’m pondering on this…

I think I’m a rebel, although I don’t know how many people would agree.
“What brings about this confession,” you may ask?
Something deep in me recoils at the thought of making New Year’s resolutions. I refuse! Good glory, I need to make changes, but I’d rather make a change on January 7, April 24th, Friday the 13th ….any day but the first.
I’m not sure if it’s because I don’t want to be lumped in with everybody else, or something else . . .
It started in 1st grade when Mrs. Bolander told me to color in an outline of a duck…I’ll tell you that story later… maybe!
You know, maybe more people see my independent heart than I think??
What about you? Do you like the idea of making resolutions with friends? Strangers? Or are you more independent?
